电力设备往往都对基础稳定性要求较高,对沉降较为敏感,若变电站的地基承载力较差,为了保障设备的运行,必须对地基进行处理。管桩对单体较沉重的设备效果很好,稳定性高且施工速度快,但工程造价较贵;强夯法对大面积的地基处理较为经济,且能满足大部分小设备的要求。

针对性质不同的地基上,如软土、湿陷性黄土、膨胀土、岩溶、滑移、液化等特殊地质情况,采用不同的地基处理方法,以达到地基处理的目的。如:提高地基承载力;提高地基抗剪强度、防止地基产生过大的剪切变形,避免大面积土体滑动;改善土的压缩性、减少地基变形;改善土的动力特性、减轻或地震效应、防止砂土液化;消陷性黄土的湿陷性;防止膨胀土遇水膨胀,干旱收缩的性能;解决岩溶地区的溶沟、溶洞等危害。
